I am interested in the processes that produce variation in living organisms, especially in the teeth and skulls of humans and non-human primates. Genetic variation is an essential component of evolution by natural selection, and I study this variation through statistical modeling of heritabilities and genetic correlations of dental and skeletal shape measurements in several primate populations. I am especially focused on understanding how the distinct functions served by different tooth types have impacted the genetic architecture of teeth and jaws. Variation in developmental processes can also reflect genetic variation and complicate the process by which genes produce phenotypes. I study variation in the development of the human skull to understand how genetic and non-genetic differences in developmental processes can produce substantial variation in the adult face.
