Podiatric Medicine associations provide resources and advocacy to the profession. Many of the organizations below have associated student clubs and student resources available online.

PODIATRIC MEDICINE ASSOCIATIONS

American Podiatric Medical Association

APMA’s staff, comprised of approximately 60 professionals, is dedicated to promoting foot and ankle health, member service, and professional excellence. Looking toward the future, APMA will continue to advance the growth and stability of podiatric medicine by increasing nationwide awareness of foot and ankle health through public education and legislative advocacy.

American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine

The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine’s (AACPM) mission is to serve as the leader in facilitating and promoting excellence in podiatric medical education leading to the delivery of the highest quality lower extremity healthcare to the public. AACPM’s membership consists of nine podiatric medical schools and more than 200 hospitals and institutions that offer postdoctoral training in podiatric medicine. The Association serves as a national forum for the exchange of ideas, issues formation and concerns relating to podiatric medical education.

The American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA)

The American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association is the national, student-led organization that serves as the collective voice for all podiatric medical students. We are committed to the protection and advancement of student rights and interests by advocating in legislative and educational arenas. We provide resources to our members to assist them throughout their education as they transition into podiatric residents and physicians.

Council on Podiatric Medical Education

The mission of the Council is to promote the quality of graduate education, postgraduate education, certification, and continuing education. By confirming these programs meet established standards and requirements, the Council serves to protect the public, podiatric medical students, and doctors of podiatric medicine.

National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners

The National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME) is a nonprofit corporation established in Missouri in 1956. NBPME became a New Jersey Corporation in 1978. The mission of the corporation is to develop and administer examinations of such high quality that the various legal agencies governing the practice of podiatric medicine may choose to license those who have successfully completed such examinations for practice in their jurisdictions without further examination. Furthermore, the corporation may, at its discretion, develop examinations of the same caliber to meet the various needs of groups within the profession.

National Podiatric Medical Association (NPMA)

In 2017 the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery officially became an Active Section of the National Medical Association. This group will continue foster the philosophy of disadvantaged/minority recruitment, retention, achievement and professional development.

American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery

The American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) strives to protect and improve the health and welfare of the public by advancing the art and science of foot and ankle surgery. To accomplish this goal, ABFAS grants certification status to candidates who successfully meet the guidelines for demonstrating competency and proficiency in the art and science of foot and ankle surgery.

American Board of Podiatric Medicine

The American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) offers a comprehensive board certification process in podiatric medicine and orthopedics. Increasingly hospitals, surgical centers, managed care organizations and insurance carriers require board certification. ABPM is the only board recognized by the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards, under the authority of the American Podiatric Medical Association to certify in podiatric orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine.

American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) is a professional society of more than 7,800 foot and ankle surgeons. Founded in 1942, ACFAS seeks to inspire excellence in foot and ankle care for every patient by every member and empower our members to be proven leaders and lifelong learners who positively impact the lives of their patients. American College of Podiatric Medicine

ACPM advocates for the importance of maintaining thorough scientific knowledge and clinical skills in the biomechanical and medical aspects of podiatric practice. ACPM also advocates for the importance of biomechanics and medicine to the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, the accrediting agency for all forms of podiatric medical education, and the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, the association representing all the schools and colleges of podiatric medicine and its Council of Teaching Hospitals, that oversees all residency training programs.

Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association

The Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the official journal of the Association, is the oldest and most frequently cited peer-reviewed journal in the profession of foot and ankle medicine. Founded in 1907 and appearing 6 times per year, it publishes research studies, case reports, literature reviews, special communications, clinical correspondence, letters to the editor, book reviews, and various other types of submissions. The Journal is included in major indexing and abstracting services for biomedical literature.

Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery

The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery is the leading source for original, clinically-focused articles on the surgical and medical management of the foot and ankle. Each bi-monthly, peer-reviewed issue addresses relevant topics to the profession, such as: adult reconstruction of the forefoot; adult reconstruction of the hindfoot and ankle; diabetes; medicine/rheumatology; pediatrics; research; sports medicine; trauma; and tumors.

Foot & Ankle Specialist

Foot & Ankle Specialist (FAS) is a bimonthly journal offering peer-reviewed clinical information for foot and ankle caregivers. Written and edited by podiatrists and orthopaedic surgeons, FAS offers the latest techniques and advancements in foot and ankle treatment through research reports and reviews, technical perspectives, case studies, and other evidence-based articles. FAS enables practitioners to address a broad range of disorders and provide their patients with the best current diagnosis and therapy.
