The Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Veterinary Medicine’s Reverence for Life Commitment promises that animals will not be harmed in our teaching programs. We believe in the profound bond between humans and their beloved animal companions and understand that saying goodbye to a cherished pet is never easy, which is why we established the Willed deceased Animals for Veterinary Education (WAVE) program. This program offers pet owners a unique and meaningful opportunity to honor their departed furry friends by donating their bodies to veterinary education. These selfless donations become an invaluable resource for our students, providing essential hands-on learning experiences that shape the next generation of compassionate veterinarians. More than 500 deceased animals have been donated to the college in the last two years, proving to be an integral part in providing a greater quality of education to future generations of veterinarians.

All donations to WAVE must be deceased due to age, serious illness or injury. An animal that has no owner to approve the donation of its remains will not be accepted.

When the death of a beloved pet might be imminent, and you live within 40 miles of the college, please ask your veterinarian about donating to WAVE. Or, for more information contact:

Those concerned about what will happen to their animals should their human caregivers become incapacitated or die might consider including provisions in an estate plan. One means of doing so is to establish a charitable remainder unitrust to ensure their care in the event disaster strikes. The Pet Memorial Program provides an opportunity for guardians and friends to support the education of the next generation of compassionate, skilled veterinary healers while memorializing the relationship that existed with cherished pets.

Basic Laparoscopy Course

The Basic Laparoscopy Course is an intensive and hands-on training program tailored for veterinarians with minimal experience in laparoscopic surgery. The course covers essential skills such as abdominal exploration, biopsies, and ovariectomy, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. Starting with bench-top laparoscopic models and simulators, participants progress to live patient procedures, ensuring a well-rounded preparation for practicing laparoscopy safely. Advanced Laparoscopy Course

For those with prior laparoscopic experience, the Advanced Laparoscopy Course offers an intense program focusing on laparoscopic Assisted-Gastropexy and the option of Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS). Emphasizing a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical experience, participants begin with bench-top models and progress to live patient procedures. Instructors and equipment company representatives offer insights on effectively integrating these advanced techniques into participants’ practices. Completion of the course equips veterinarians with the skills to safely perform assisted-laparoscopic gastropexy and SILS, enhancing their surgical capabilities to meet the growing market demands.
